After rejecting playing the bassoon and singing in dodgy new romantic bands as career options, Phil Nelson became a full-time artist manager in 1988, as “friend-of-the-band-turned-manager”, managing The Levellers.
In his 26 years as a manager, he has been an integral figure in the music industry in Brighton and beyond, from setting up The Levellers’ Metway Studios and helping them establish their Beautiful Days Festival in Devon, to being vice chairman of The Music Managers Forum for 8 years and co-founding Brighton’s Great Escape Festival.
His other artists include or have included The Longpigs, Octopus, Aqualung (Matt Hales), Duke Special, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Foreign Slippers, some of whom have released albums on his own labels Hag and Adventures in Gramophone. On his wall hang 2 Platinum and 8 Gold discs. He also looks after producer Dave “Izumi” Lynch.
Outside of management, Phil lectures at Bucks University and the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.
