Welcome to the world of Foreign Slippers, where flocks of scratchy birds fly over enchanted forests full of cloth dogs and mercurial musicians, while a bewitching voice sings lullabies to the icy sky… the world created and inhabited by Gabi Froden; singer, artist, author, songwriter and ruling deity of Foreign Slippers.
Starting with singing in the church choir in her native Norrkoping in Sweden, she quietly dropped her clarinet for the charms of her mother’s old piano at age 14. Snowbound in a small town, she learned to pluck out songs on a rattly guitar and would sing harmony along with her brothers to pass the long winter evenings.
Musically, she has travelled via the Tom Petty and Pavement covers of her early bands, all the way to the haunting melodies of the album Farewell To The Old Ghosts. Drawing on folk & gospel and caught up in creaking tales of longing and mortality, her songs manage to both haunt and hold you. Her voice is unique in all the very best ways and to miss her live is to miss a treat. And probably an amazing hat.
There is a new world to explore; strange but familiar, exotic but comforting. Isn’t it time you put on some Foreign Slippers? And when you do, be sure to discover her wonderful illustrations and humorous hand-made greetings cards and prints too.
